Art dealer Fergus Madden is holding an exhibition of lithographs by Marc Chagall at the Jam Factory, in Park End Street, Oxford, from tomorrow until May 15. The exhibition will then be transferred to the Fergus Madden Gallery, in Stanford Dingley, Berkshire.
Chagall was one of the most original artists of the 20th century. He developed a highly characteristic and personal style, which sets him apart from the major artistic movements of the time, and yet he had a great impact on the art of the century.
He was born in Russia in 1887 and drew much inspiration from local traditions and from biblical and classical texts, yet he was also influenced by works of art coming from Western Europe. In 1923, he moved to Paris, the powerhouse' of so much modernism, both mainstream and surrealist. The visionary nature of his works had a great appeal for the surrealists, but Chagall was never formally a part of this group. His work often incorporates folklore with mythological themes to produce dream-like images. His biblical pictures - including Paradise 2, above - are moving and deeply spiritual. During his long life he was very prolific and he has contributed much to the canon' of modern art.
