Sir - In response to the letter, Soviet-style queues are unacceptable (March 28), I would like to clarify for your readers the range of ways to pay for a TV licence.

It is no longer possible to buy a TV licence at the Post Office; however, you can pay over the counter at any PayPoint outlet across the UK, of which there are more than 19,000.

The BBC took the decision to transfer TV licence payments to PayPoint to deliver better value for money for licence fee payers and provide a more convenient and accessible service.

The BBC expects to save more than £100m during the life of the six-year contract, which will be put directly into programmes and services. There are more PayPoint outlets around the UK than Post Office branches, and they usually have longer opening hours. People can find their nearest PayPoint outlet by calling 0870 850 7846 or visiting www.paypoint.co.uk/locator People can also choose to pay for their TV licence by direct debit, which is used by over 12 million licence fee payers, or via our website, by putting a cheque in the post, or by debit or credit card over the phone.

TV licensing savings stamps are no longer available, having been replaced by the more secure electronic TV licensing savings card. Payments on the card can be made at PayPoint outlets and over the phone.

We want to make it as easy as possible for people to pay for their TV licence, so we would urge anyone having problems finding a suitable payment method to contact us so we can find a payment solution which meets their specific needs. Readers wanting further information can visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk, or contact TV Licensing on 0844 800 6732.
