Sir - I am relieved to see that the Abingdon Lock house is not among those destined to be sold (Report, April 25). However the proposed sale of other lock houses is a significant change for the River Thames, and the fear is that more will follow.
There is an important role for resident lock-keepers in controlling weirs and locks, in understanding local conditions during floods, and in supporting and informing river users. The loss of resident lock-keepers could lead to increased dangers for all of us who use, or live near, the River Thames.
Alastair Fear, Abingdon
