A BATTERY recycling scheme is to be extended after a successful first year.

Cherwell District Council launched the scheme in April last year, and since then around four tons of batteries have been handed in at collection points in the area.

The batteries are sent for recycling instead of being dumped in landfill tips.

Ian Davies, the council's strategic director for the environment and community, said: "This scheme has been a huge success. It has meant that the equivalent of 125,000 AA batteries have been recycled rather than dumped.

"I would encourage everyone who uses batteries at home to recycle even more. We have around 30 battery collection points across the district."

Drop-off points can accept AAA-, AA-, C-, and D-size household batteries as well as button, mobile phone, laptop, and rechargeable batteries. The collection sites are in:

  • BICESTER (Shakespeare Drive; Bowmont Square; Co-op, in Barberry Place; Southwold Holm Square; Langford Village; Wickes, in Launton Road; Bicester Town Council offices, The Garth, in Launton Road; Bicester Library, Old Place Yard; Cherwell Council offices, in Market Place; Bicester Sports Centre, and Tesco, in Pingle Field)
  • KIDLINGTON (Kidlington Sports Centre; Thames Valley Police HQ; Sainsbury's; Exeter Hall cash office and bring site; Tesco, in Watts Way)
