Neighbours have pulled together to plan a good old fashioned street party to celebrate the end of 10 months of flooding misery.

There will be barbecues, bouncy castles and bunting galore in Tower Close, Abingdon, next Saturday.

Neighbours decided to host the party to thank those who have worked hard to repair their flood-devastated homes.

They have bought balloons and decorations, and a generous grant of £500 from Oxfordshire Citizens Housing Association (OCHA), which manages the houses, has gone towards other entertainment.

Yvonne Dudley, flood co-ordinator at OCHA, will be one of the VIP guests, in recognition of the work the association has done.

She said: "The community was close knit and really pulled together with the incident that happened in July."

Builders who restored the residents' homes are also invited.

Linda Joel, who is on the committee of residents organising the street bash, said: "My main concern was to get together everybody as a community to celebrate the end of all the work that has been going on.

"Builders have been in the street for the past eight months and they have worked so hard, this is a way of getting together and getting them involved as well."

Mrs Joel, 54, whose home was under a foot of water and whose kitchen has only just been repaired, will host a disco and karaoke, while her daughter has organised children's games.

There will be barbecues and refreshments all along the balloon covered street and any money raised will go to charity.

Television presenter Wesley Smith from ITV's Thames Valley Tonight is set to officially open the party.

Organisers are expecting about 150 people at the party -but say anybody affected by floods in the area is welcome to attend.

Mrs Joel said: "Anybody is welcome to come down for a bit of food and fun."
