Topsy the skewbald mare proudly showed off her latest prize - a plaque and rosette recognising her 15 years of loyal service to disabled riders.

Topsy joined the New Yatt Group of the Riding for the Disabled Association (NYRDA), in North Leigh, near Witney, in 1992.

Volunteer instructor, Pat Kelly said: "Topsy was born in 1984, the year of the group's foundation - and she joined it when she was eight years old.

"She was expecting a foal, and her filly, Humbug, was born the following spring."

She added: "Topsy has always been popular with the disabled riders as she is steady and reliable.

"Over the years she has given rides to children and adults with a whole range of difficulties, and she can carry even the most fragile people in safety.

"She has even helped some of the more able riders to experience the fun of competing in local horse shows and sometimes coming home with a winner's rosette."

Topsy has taken part in sponsored rides to raise money for the RDA group, and raised funds for the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) by completing its Welfare Awareness Ride in 1996.

She received her long service award from Eric Montgomery and Graham Allen, two of the first riders with the group when it was set up in 1984.

Also present were Barbara Morris, one of the group's founding members and Anthea Wilkins, one of its earliest instructors.

New Yatt RDA was set up on a small scale - with just two ponies and a paddock - to give riding instruction for local people with special needs.

It moved to its current site in North Leigh in 1996 and caters for about 60 riders each week.

All upkeep, tuition and fundraising is done by a team of volunteers.

One of the key fundraising events is the NYRDA Sponsored Ride, held at Eynsham Park.

Last Sunday 142 riders attended the event, raising over £4850 for the Group.

New helpers are always needed (with or without horse experience).
