OXFORDSHIRE County Council has been rated as "performing well", according to an independent report published today by the Audit Commission.

The commission's corporate assessment team found the council was "on a rapid improvement journey", with a strong focus on low taxes, customer choice and value for money.

Earlier this year, the failure to improve local schools resulted in the council being demoted from a four to a three-star authority by same organisation.

Robert Hathaway, Audit Commission senior manager in Oxfordshire, said: "Overall, the council is performing well."
