I am glad to back the policy of reducing the speed limit to 20mph in Wood Farm, Oxford (Oxford Mail, April 14).
I have given it my support since it was first discussed at the city council's north east area committee in 2006/7. At that time, the IWCA requested all roads in the ward be reduced to a 20mph speed limit for safety reasons, and I appeared on Radio Oxford to help publicise the campaign.
I also supported the campaigners who had signposted lamposts in the ward with '20 is plenty' posters, much to the county council's annoyance.
What a shame then that Mark Lygo has misled local residents by implying that if he was elected to the city council, he would be able to influence changes to the speed limit.
He is perhaps unaware that speed limits are controlled by the county council.
Unfortunately, our Labour county councillor Liz Brighouse has shown little interest in this issue. In fact, her only comment when the issues of speeding and illegal parking in Titup Hall Drive were brought up was to say that the zig-zag lines outside Wood Farm School were not enforceable.
I'm sure those who have campaigned long and hard for these speed limits will see Mr Lygo's new-found interest in local issues for the political opportunism that it is.
