Some of the hottest stars in the worlds of jazz and soul music are set to lend their voices to the grand reopening of a former bingo hall and cinema in East Oxford.

The Regal club, at the junction of Cowley Road and Magdalen Road, opened its elite room and foyer in February, but work is still under way on the so-called great room.

Now the men behind the city's newest nightspot have unveiled plans for the main auditorium's opening night on Tuesday, April 29.

It will be a charity evening to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and Help an Oxfordshire Child - and organisers are hoping to rake in up to £6,000 to be split between the two causes.

Managing director Adam Marsh said: "We chose Macmillan because it is close to me. I had a grandmother who died at home of cancer and they looked after her in her last couple of weeks.

"Help an Oxfordshire Child seemed like the best way to support lots of children's charities locally."

Among the performers will be up-and-coming jazz star Natalie Williams, a regular at Ronnie Scott's Club, in Soho, along with Soul Family, featuring the singing talents of Basement Jaxx, vocalists Vula and Sharlene Hector, R 'n' B star Nate James, Robin Mullarkey, who has sung for Zero 7, and Moloko's Phil Peskett.

The giant ballroom can hold up to 850 people. Tickets for the opening night, which starts at 8pm, cost £18 and are available from the-regal.com and tickets for the following night, a May ball, priced at £25, are also on sale.
