Sir - Taking into account Peter Berry's letter (April 4) concerning the 'Wonderful City Of Oxford' and the need to attract visitors I will happily admit that parts of the city are beautiful.
They are best viewed at 5am on a bright summer morning. Sitting in Radcliffe Square or walking down from there, passing colleges, and then into Christ Church Meadow is a wonderful experience. After that time the city seems to descend into a traffic chaos.
Please bear in mind that I lived, was educated and worked in the city.
What is happening now? The last time my wife and I dared to come into town we experienced drunken louts both in George Street and the Cowley Road. Personally I have decided not to come to Oxford again unless it should be an unavoidable visit. Even our local pensioners, who have hired coaches for shopping trips, prefer to go to Swindon, Cheltenham or Banbury.
Perhaps it is time for Oxford to sort itself out and allow both tourists and locals to enjoy the amenities without fear before considering the costs of hotels.
