Hundreds of people of all ages are expected to turn out this weekend for St George's Day events across Oxfordshire.

On Sunday in Oxford, more than 200 members of the Oxford Spires Scout District will hold their annual parade through the streets.

Starting in Broad Street at 2.15pm, the procession will head to the Town Hall in St Aldate's for a brief service, before moving to Oxford Castle, where the flag of St George will be raised on the castle's turret.

Margaret Boggs, secretary for the Oxford Spires Scout District, said: "The service isn't just about Scouting, but about patriotism without being jingoistic.

"People are more than welcome to come along and join us in this celebration."

Lord Mayor John Tanner, who will be welcoming the Scouts on their arrival at the Town Hall, said it was a great honour to be involved in the day.

He said: "It's important that we celebrate being English and St George's Day.

"He might be a patron saint we know very little about, but if we have St Patrick's Day and St David's Day then I'm very pleased to support the Scouts."

In Wheatley, a free event has been organised.

Organiser Gordon Ewbanks is hoping the day will be as popular as last year's event, which saw nearly 700 people turning out for the celebrations.

He said: "The key thing about this event is that we are trying to bring the community together.

"People will be able to come out and enjoy the day and meet new friends and neighbours.

"The whole day is free of charge, we just want people to come and have a good time."

The event has been organised by churches in the area and Fusion, a Christian charity that organises youth groups working with young people in the community.

Mr Ewbanks said: "We've been able to make this a free event by getting the support of local businesses, as well as donations from private individuals and the churches.

"We try to provide for all age groups. It's not always easy to do that in a village our size, but we think there will be something there for most to enjoy."

Water volley ball, craft activities, a bouncy castle, a dramatic reconstruction of the tale of St George, a tug-o-war and a free barbecue will all be there on the day.

More than 40 volunteers have promised their time to the event taking place at Wheatley Recreation Ground between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday.
