I read James Styring's article about the dangers of private hire vehicles being allowed into Oxford bus lanes (On Yer Bike, Oxford Mail, April 8) and couldn't agree more.
When I was a taxi driver, I rarely used bus lanes, because of the antics of some cyclists.
In fact, I wrote to the Transport Minister some years ago and asked that the speed limit for those permitted to use bus lanes be reduced to 20mph.
My reasoning was that as there was no other traffic obstructing the flow, a 20mph speed limit would be sufficient for all vehicles using these lanes.
They could then bypass stationary vehicles at a safe speed and reach their destinations more quickly.
Unfortunately, this suggestion, made by a mere mortal, was dismissed out of hand.
Perhaps cycling organisations could have a go on the same lines.
Or perhaps county council leader Keith Mitchell could introduce a bylaw.
