Sir - As a long-term rheumatology patient of over 25 years at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, I was horrified to learn of the recent failure to achieve Foundation Status.
This hospital is a very precious commodity; a brand new state-of-the-art building with experienced staff to support the specialist and expensive procedures and back-up services required.
The staff have worked hard to build up the reputation and to ensure there is no current deficit. Sadly, this Government appears unwilling to subsidise the higher commercial price under the national payment by results system.
I am concerned about future treatment for anyone with musculoskeletal and rehabilitation needs.
Isn't it about time we treasured our health system and offered realistic recompense to the providers for the specialist services required by those with long-term illnesses?
