Sir - I was delighted to read Susanna Pressel's optimism (Letters, April 4) about solving car park problems and would like to add the following observations.
The car park in Walton Well Road is intended to be used, as their previous known names suggest, not only for visitors to Port Meadow but also for allotment holders on the adjacent Cripley Meadow.
The lack of signage, control and access in and through the car park for allotment holders and maintenance vehicles has been a persistent problem for the working of this allotment site.
Cripley Meadow is one of the largest allotment sites in the city. Over the past three years, with help from Oxford City Parks Department and financial support from the Co-op and Berkeley Homes, our allotment association has worked hard to reclaim Cripley Meadow from decades of neglect. It is now a thriving site with over 130 members and we are still growing.
We are grateful for the work of the Parks Department and the Countryside Team on the bollards, maintenance and repairs. It will be good to be able to use the car park again.
We are also looking forward to seeing how the ticket machine and new signage work to keep parking from our gates and safeguard access, car and cycle path users.
Cripley Meadow allotment members worked on March 16 as part of Oxclean to clean up both car parks and land by the railway. We removed some 26 bags of rubbish. This and the recent work, the reclamation of Cripley Meadow and recent activities on Port Meadow have contributed to making this area more welcoming and secure.
Wendy Skinner Smith, Chairman, Cripley Meadow Allotment Association
