We are often accused, unfairly we feel, of focusing on the more negative aspects of the news, particularly when dealing with young people.
So we are delighted to relate the story this week of schoolboy Carl McKenna, who, while on work experience with a construction firm, dragged a motorist from his burning vehicle seconds before it burst into flames.
Witnesses have little doubt that the 15-year-old saved the motorist's life after he chased the burning van - which was carrying a gas cylinder - and dragged the driver out of the vehicle.
Carl, a pupil at John Mason School in Abingdon, acted without thinking of his own safety. If anyone deserves an award it is him.
