Botley United, lying only fifth in Division 3, took their third big scalp to reach the final of the North Berks Charity Shield, as they beat last year's double winners Ardington & Lockinge in a penalty shoot-out, writes AAndy Wells Following a goalless draw after extra time, Botley triumphed 3-1 in the shoot-out to earn a place in the final against Faringdon Town, who reacorded a 2-0 victory over Harwell International.
Botley had already knocked out Kingsclere and Lambourn Sports in normal time. This time, in a game of few chances, they held on, despite going down to ten players in the extra period.
The only moment of drama in normal time came when Division 1 side Ardington struck a post four minutes before the end.
In extra time, the Ardington goal led a charmed life in a frantic goalmouth scramble that ensued after Andy Potter had seen his effort smash against a post.
On the stroke of half-time Ardington's Neil Davis was chopped down from behind by Mark Penner, who was sent off for a second yellow card.
The underdogs managed to see out the time with their biggest alarm coming when Andy Cooper smashed a free-kick against the bar in the final minute.
Botley missed their first kick in the penalty shoot-out when Ardington keeper Mark Pryde palmed Carl Parker's effort over the bar, but Ben Taylor, Andy Potter and Chris Potter all converted.
For Ardington, Gareth Fenton scored their first effort, but Chris Whitworth's kick was saved, Glyn McGibbon fired wide and then Cooper's effort was superbly saved by Botley keeper Duncan Turner to set up wild celebrations within the Botley camp.
In the other semi-final, Harwell had the better of the possession, but it was Faringdon who went through to the final thanks to two first-half goals.
Lee Ruddle put them ahead from the penalty spot after Gary Sutton had been brought down, then Robbie Harrington made it 2-0 withb a left-footed strike.
