A Broad Street charity shop has reacted to news that the road will be pedestrianised.

The city centre street will be pedestrianised as part of an 18-month trial by Oxfordshire County Council.

It follows the success of Broad Meadow which ran for several months last summer after the Covid-19 pandemic and saw thousands of people visit the city.

The project will see ticket machines and parking removed from the street, with planters and seating placed there instead.

Oxfordshire County Council aims for the space to be an open-air meeting location in the city centre which provides a green space for the public.

It will run from autumn 2022 to spring 2024.

Dage Loranca, shop manager at the Oxfam shop in Broad Street said: “We hope there’ll be a real boost for all the businesses here in Broad Street and that it will bring more people into the shop.

“We were the UK’s first ever charity shop and this month, Oxfam in Broad Street celebrates its 75th anniversary.

“The trial to pedestrianise Broad Street is a new challenge but, with our fantastic team of volunteers and wonderful customers all helping to raise vital funds for Oxfam’s work fighting poverty around the world, we’re confident it will have a positive impact.”
