AN OXFORD cheerleading group is on the look-out for children as young as four to train as pom-pom shaking dancers.
The Strawberry Fayre Majorettes want to create a new pee wee' squad called The Firecatsorr, which they hope will be good enough to compete for the British Cheerleading Association's national competition in 2010.
The majorettes already have a senior squad of seven to 16-year-olds, but hope to encourage youngsters - including boys - to learn twists, twirls and pom pom work at weekly classes in Greater Leys.
Sonia Denmark, one of the co-organisers of the 36-strong senior troupe, said: "We want to introduce more small children. It is easier to teach them from that young age.
"If they can come in doing the splits, handstands or cartwheels that would be a bonus because they will already have the basics.
"They need enthusiasm and be willing to learn.
"It is healthy for them - they are doing exercise and will enjoy it at the same time."
Strawberry Majorettes were formed in 1992 by Eileen Filer, of Church Cowley Road. And they have gone from strength to strength.
Ms Filer said: "It is fun, and is not all work. We play games connected with cheerleading.
"There is dance, gymnastics, and we do elevators and throws. It is getting more and more like American style cheerleading."
In December the troupe appealed for boys to join, and they now have an 11-year-old member.
The troupe is practising routines for the British Red Cross Dance For Life, which will be held at The Amey Theatre, Abingdon on Saturday, April 26.
Organisers would also like to hear from anyone interested in mixing music for the troupe's dance routines.
