A drinker was smashed across the face with a bar stool leaving him with serious facial injuries.
Police are appealing for information about the assault in the Punch Bowl public house, in Market Place, Abingdon, at about 8.30pm on Friday.
The man was in the pub when he was approached by another man who picked up the stool and used it to hit him in the face.
He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, with serious facial injuries.
Dc Will Downey said: "There were other people in the area at the time including those in and around the pub.
"We're still investigating exactly what happened and I would ask anyone who witnessed this assault to get in touch."
