The northbound carriageway of the M40 beyond Banbury has reopened after being closed this morning by a multi-vehicle pile-up.
However, the southbound carriageway is still closed between junction 15, near Leamington Spa, in Warwickshire, and junction 11, at Banbury.
Traffic diverted off the motorway is causing congestion in Banbury and on roads in the north of Oxfordshire, which is expected to last for the rest of the day.
The motorway was closed after the crash, involving three lorries and two cars, at 10.20am today. One person was taken to hospital in Coventry with serious injuries.
The northbound carriageway reopened at 3.30pm.
Police have arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving and are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
Anyone with information should call Sgt Peter Jell, of the Bicester traffic unit, on 08458 505505.
