A NEW police base has opened inside a supermarket in a bid to bring officers closer to an Oxford estate.
The office, at Sainsbury's at Heyford Hill, is not open to the public, but police said it would improve response times to incidents in Littlemore.
PC Tim Symons said: "More of our time can be spent dealing with incidents and patrolling the area rather than back and forth from Cowley police station.
"Sainsbury's have said similar projects have cut shoplifting and antisocial behaviour in their stores.
"For people living in Littlemore, we will be a lot more visible and will be here more often.
"It is an exciting time for us."
The office, which is next to the staff canteen and is equipped with computers and filing cabinets to deal with police paperwork, will be open to PCs and PCSOs 24 hours a day.
