Sir - Councillor Mitchell (Letters, February 29) is worryingly ambivalent about Parkridge's huge "Weston-on-Otmoor" town proposal, and his March 14 letter does not clarify whether he thinks M40 Junction 9 could cope with the proposed 15,000 new homes. Conversely, his claim that just 5,000 new homes at Shipton Quarry would generate 12,500 commuters out of this eco-town seems an over-estimate. 2,500 residents would be employed within the new town, which would also have its own primary and secondary schools.

Kilbride Properties' transport plan rests on Network Rail's GW Main Line Route Plan, which includes substantial capacity and reliability improvements for Oxford.

1: Paddington trains terminating at Oxford have to cross tracks to the north of the station before their return run to London, often delaying other trains as they do so. The planned London terminus platform south of Botley Road should solve this.

2: Cotswold line trains often run late, delaying other trains when they reach Wolvercote Junction. NR's plan to double much of the track on the Cotswold line will improve timekeeping.

3: Bicester Town trains share the main line between Oxford North Junction and Oxford Station. A planned extra track for Bicester trains between these points will separate them from the main line.

4: NR plans to re-signal the Oxford area in 2014.

5: Extra freight loops between Didcot and Oxford will absorb expected increases in freight traffic.

Oxfordshire County Council wants a rail station at Kidlington. If it were to support Shipton Quarry eco-town, it could get Kilbride Properties to add a station at Kidlington as a Section 106 planning benefit.
