What fun the young Oxfordshire artists must have had producing the work that now hangs in the North Wall Gallery, in South Parade, Oxford. They have created such vibrant, happy pictures that they deserve to be seen and praised by us all.
The Young Artists Open Exhibition, until March 29, has been organised by members of Oxford Art Society, who believe that children will be encouraged by seeing their work displayed in a professional space. Although some prizes have already been awarded, visitors are invited to vote for an overall winner from the 99 works on display.
My vote must go to an unnamed work, created mainly from fabric, which depicts a colourful forest of trees and flowers. It's a group collaboration piece, organised by kids@art, the charitable wing of Oxfordshire Artweeks which provides funds for artists to work with young children and encourage them to be creative. This work is so imaginative it bears witness to the positive nature of this charitable enterprise. Everything about it, including the torn fabric leaves, the flowers, and even the knitted squares that make up the sky, dances with life. It's a simply magical work, particularly as a series of name tags, bearing words such as trust and freedom dangle from the picture's edge.
Ryan Tam's paper and paint model of a magpie, which hangs from the ceiling, deserves high praise, too. It's simply captivating, particularly as Ryan has also created a papier-mâché log, complete with leaves on which the magpie rests. Ryan is currently studying in the Oxfordshire Hospital School. Patrick Richards, from Northern House School, has created a superb image of Henry VIII, that comes with a gold chain, glittery belt, hair and whiskers and a real feather in his cap.
Another superb group collaboration is entitled First Class. Enterprising youngsters working at The Art Room, Rose Hill, have covered two chairs with used first-class stamps. The effect is both stunning and resourceful. So, well done to the Art Room students too.
The North Wall Gallery is open from Monday to Saturday (excluding Easter Monday) from 11am to 4pm.
