Sir - I was heartened by your report on the post office's plans for closures in Oxfordshire and the city.
It is striking that there are no plans to close any post offices in North Oxford - there are no post offices left to close! This is in large part the result of the closure of outlets hosting sub-post offices, not post office policy.
Also gratifying, is the action taken by both the county and city councils challenging post office plans.
Is there a case for the Oxfordshire county and city council to follow Essex's example? Maybe space could be found on the council's Summertown premises for the first such sub-post office in Oxfordshire?
Local post offices have for generations been established as an essential service and manifestation of the British way of life - to quote from Jane Austen's Emma first published in 1816 The post office is a wonderful establishment! If one thinks of all it has to do, and all that it does so well, it is really astonishing!'
