A man took a 24-inch serrated hand saw to a pub after staff threw his friend out of the bar.
Oxford Crown Court was told Christopher Huxham, of Sandford Green, Banbury, had earlier admitted possessing an offensive weapon.
Andrew Morgan, prosecuting, said Huxham, 20, threw the saw away after spotting police outside The Cricketers Arms pub in Banbury on February 22.
But Graham Bennett, defending, said Huxham was just trying to defend his friend.
Judge Charles Elly gave Huxham a six-month community order and a curfew between 7pm and 7am.
