St Edward's (Oxford) enjoyed scant reward for their efforts as they finished fourth in the national under 18 hockey finals.
Despite being the second-highest scorers in the tournament at St George's College, Weybridge, Surrey, two narrow defeats proved costly for the Teddies girls.
Lettie Cary hit a hat-trick as St Edward's got off to a flying start with a 4-0 win over Hymers.
Mel Tuckett deflected the ball high into the net to give St Edward's an eighth-minute lead.
And then Cary took centre stage, netting twice in the first two minutes of the second half before turning home Vicky Cole's pass at the far post for her treble.
St Edward's then slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Queenswood, before going down 2-1 to Clifton.
Cary opened the scoring with a brilliant individual goal in the first minute of the second half.
But Clifton equalised from a penalty corner and then grabbed the winner with a fine solo effort.
It meant Teddies had nothing to play for but pride in their final game against reigning champions Repton, who ran out 3-1 winners.
The south Derbyshire side broke the stalemate a minute before half-time, and added two more in the second half.
Cary pulled one back for Teddies with her fifth goal, making her the tournament's top scorer.
St Edward's, who had become the first school to win the county tournament at under 14, 16 and 18 this season, rounded off a successful campaign by beating Cheltenham Ladies College 3-0.
Tuckett opened the scoring after 15 minutes, forcing home a rebound from Teddies' second penalty corner.
Cary scored another fine individual effort inside the first minute of the second half to increase their lead.
And Zoe Shipperley fired home from a penalty corner to seal victory.
