Mourners gathered to pay tribute to their former mayor.
More than 100 people in Bicester paid their respects to Dr Ajit Bhart.
The town's current mayor John Cozens and his wife Beryl were among those gathered at the town council offices in Launton Road, on Monday, as the hearse drove around The Garth.
Also present was Cherwell District Council's chief executive Mary Harpley; The Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Hugo Brunner; town and district councillors, and representatives from the Bicester garrison, Bicester's Twinning Association and the Royal British Legion.
The cortege had set off from Dr Bhart's family home in nearby Caversfield.
A picture of Dr Bhart was displayed inside the hearse as well as family flowers saying "Daddy" and "Brother".
The English, EU and town council flags were flown at half-mast as the hearse passed around The Garth, before making its way along Launton Road, through the town's Market Square, into Victoria Road and then on to Slough for the funeral.
Mr Cozens said: "It was tremendous that the people of Bicester turned out to show their respects to an excellent town mayor. He is going to be sadly missed."
Dr Bhart died a day after his 70 birthday.
