A 41-year-old man needed eight stitches after an attack outside a pub in Witney at the weekend.
He received a head wound and heavy bruising after the assault outside the Robin Hood pub in Hailey Road at 8.45pm on Saturday night.
He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for treatment.
Pc Graham Lea said: "Unfortunately, this man has no recollection of what happened to him, but doctors say his injuries are consistent with being kicked or struck with a blunt instrument.
"There was a large number of people inside the pub on a typically busy Saturday night and I am hoping someone may have seen this attack take place."
Witnesses are urged to contact police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 with information.
