A man suffered burns and two homes were evacuated after a fire caused a gas leak.

Firefighters were called to Orchard Way in Wantage shortly before midnight yesterday and found the fire had spread from a fence where it started to the nearby window of a house on the ground floor.

It then spread to the gas main, said the fire service.

One man suffered burns to his hands and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Two homes were evacuated because of the gas. It was later fixed by engineers.
