One of the most revealing aspects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has been the increasingly important role women are playing in the conflicts.
They have always played a part in war, but more and more are emerging at the forefront of battle.
Today, we salute Flight Lieutenant Michelle Goodman, a helicopter pilot from RAF Benson, who has become the first woman to win the Distinguished Flying Cross.
She has been honoured after she and her crew dodged flying missiles to rescue a dying soldier in a Basra street.
In the hurly-burly of our daily lives, we often forget the heroic work our troops are doing in these two troubled countries.
All risk their lives every day, and many display exceptional courage and bravery in the course of their duty.
The rescue led by Flight Lieutenant Goldman was one glittering example.
Congratulations to her on her richly-deserved award.
