Sir - Parkridge's proposal for 15,000 homes at "Weston Otmoor" would destroy 600 acres that should be preserved to grow food.

Councillor Mitchell admits it would compete harmfully with Bicester but ignores the fact that its location beside M40 junction nine would add many thousands more car commuters.

The already choked motorway junction would have to be expensively and disruptively rebuilt like Junction 10 has been. Parkridge's promised rail station and tram system would not deter prolific car commuting, and it would be easy to start building the town and then shelve the tram plan as "uneconomic". Peter Headicar (Letters, February 29) is right: the M40/A34 intersection "is the worst possible place for a new settlement".

Kilbride Properties' proposal at Shipton-on-Cherwell is much smaller and better, 3,300 of its 5,000 homes would be in a derelict limestone quarry, reclaiming this long-standing eyesore to good use. Councillor Mitchell claims "There are good transport reasons for opposing" Kilbride, but he cites no evidence for this.
