Sir - Your article Secondary eyes up foundation status (February 29) may well have given your readers the wrong impression as to the current consultation being conducted by the governing body of Oxford Community School.
The governing body's interest in acquiring foundation status for the school is not "an attempt to gain control of the school under a bid for independence" as stated in your opening paragraph. There are a number of different kinds of local authority school (Community, Foundation, Voluntary Aided, Trust, Grammar) and each type have varying degrees of flexibility in the powers delegated to them.
The Government has asked all schools to consider their status with regard to their 'choice and diversity' agenda.
All local authority schools have to abide by statutory regulations and codes of practice as regards admissions and the conditions of employment of staff and the use of school buildings and grounds.
There has been a trend over the last 20 years of increasing delegation to schools and, no doubt, this will continue, but as it stands at present, Oxford Community School intends to continue on its path to higher levels of achievement and being able to serve all in the East Oxford community with enthusiasm, commitment and imagination as a proud member of the Oxfordshire County Council's education provision for the city of Oxford.
Frank Newhofer, Chairman of governors, Oxford Community School
