So Oxford City Council intends to install a screen costing £7,000 of our money to show us how polluted the city centre is (Oxford Mail, February 22).
Most of us already know that the centre is very polluted - and one of the main reasons is that local councils have created stupid traffic schemes which make drivers take longer, more complicated routes, causing more pollution.
Apparently, the council hopes eventually to introduce a low-emission zone, banning all but the "greenest" vehicles from the city centre.
This may be fine for anyone who can afford to buy a new car, but it would be very unhelpful to less well-off drivers (pensioners and the disabled), who have to keep their old cars.
