A GREYHOUND in honour of Oxford United legend Joey Beauchamp made a winning start as racing returned to Oxford Stadium.
This morning – after a 3,517-day wait – greyhounds raced at Sandy Lane, as the Cowley venue hosted its first trials session in advance of the opening meeting on September 2.
Oi Oi Joey got off to the perfect start, beating Rackethall Oscar and Norman in trial eight, finishing in a time of 28.17.
Kiaran O’Brien, Oxford Stadium racing manager, said: “It’s been an extraordinary process to get to this stage.
“To see the greyhounds out on track for the first time in a decade at this historic venue doing what they love really was a sight to behold.
“The track raced beautifully, and full credit must go to our dedicated grounds team who have delivered the safest and most secure racing environment we could ask for.
“Oxford Stadium has the potential to establish itself as the best greyhound racing track in the country.
“Our facilities coupled with community and sporting provisions plus our commitment to greyhound welfare are all essential to the venue’s short and long-term success.
“The feedback received from our trainers points towards a bright future. We’ll be hosting further trials in the coming days to ensure our launch meeting will provide visitors with the best race night experience.”
