A FIRE spread across student accommodation after a lit cigarette failed to be properly extinguished.
Two appliances from Rewley Road Fire Station were called to the flat in Oxford at 1.30pm on Friday (12) after numerous calls about black smoke coming from the building’s roof.
Crews found the fire on a flat roof of the student accommodation and quickly extinguished it.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The cause was determined to be a cigarette that had not been fully extinguished.
We must advise our community especially during the current heat and dry spell, that extinguishing cigarettes effectively is essential.
As even the smallest of embers could cause a significant fire leading to unnecessary hazards and massive disruption in our city. If you do smoke, having a container of water to put out your cigarette is ideal.”
