POLICE stopped more than 30 people as part of seatbelt and mobile phone checks in Chipping Norton.

A speed check was scheduled on London Road yesterday morning but owing to dense fog making the use of cameras impossible, officers from the Roads Safety Team and Road Safety Officers from Oxfordshire County Council focused on drivers not wearing a seatbelt or using their mobile phone.

During a two-hour check on the road, 22 people were stopped for not wearing their seatbelts and offered the option of receiving road safety advice from officers in mitigation of a fixed penalty ticket.

Four drivers were stopped for driving while using their mobile phones. They were issued fixed penalty notices of £60, with three points on their licence. They can opt to pay £74 and attend a Call Divert workshop at a later date rather than accept the points.

When the weather cleared, officers continued with the planned speed check and between 11am and 12.30pm, seven drivers were stopped and given fixed penalties for excess speed.
