The imminent arrival of flood barriers on Osney Island is very welcome. Since the summer, we have been arguing that action needs to be taken quickly because of the growing threat of flooding. Last month's close call proved the point.
Only another serious case of flooding will prove how effective the new barriers will be, although evidence from their use in other parts of the country suggests that they can prevent flooding.
Osney Island was the most high-profile area to be affected by the summer floods. There are other areas of the city that need to be considered for similar protection - notably properties off Abingdon Road, in Wolvercote and off other parts of Botley Road.
With a permanent solution to flooding in Oxford either a long way off or potentially not even an option at all, it is important that the Environment Agency acts to ensure all those that need them have access to temporary flood barriers.
