POLICE officers have taken over the investigation into a fire that killed a pensioner and injured her husband.
Oxfordshire firefighters left the scene in Sutton Wick Lane on Monday and Thames Valley Police are now investigating the cause.
Although the investigation into the cause of the bungalow blaze last Saturday evening is still ongoing, it is not thought to be suspicious.
Emma Midgley, spokesman for Oxfordshire Fire Service, said that the most likely cause was the wood-burning stove in the home.
Graham Turner, station commander, said: "We seem reasonably sure that that's (the wood-burning stove) the way we are leaning towards. We work on the basis of eliminating other possibilities before saying 'yes, that is the one'."
Oxfordshire Coroner's Office has not officially identified the body of the elderly woman, who is thought to be Joan Martin.
Her husband Nigel remains at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, near Aylesbury, where his condition is described as critical but not life threatening.
