Sir - Ruskin will today launch a fundraising campaign for what we believe to be the first library in the country to be named after a former Prime Minister.
The Callaghan Library will commemorate the 1976 landmark speech at Ruskin that inspired the Great Debate' on education. Members of the late Lord Callaghan's surviving family, led by Baroness Margaret Jay, will attend the launch, while Gordon Brown and Tony Blair have agreed to act as Joint Honorary Presidents of the virtual fundraising committee, demonstrating their commitment to the importance of adult education and life-long learning. It's a shame that John and Vi Hughes didn't check their facts before writing to you (Letters, February 8) because the present Ruskin library, in Walton Street, has over a third of its holdings in store through lack of space and, like the rest of the college's buildings, is no longer fit for purpose.
At this important juncture in the college's life, Ruskin needs its friends to support it in achieving a £20m vision, centred on Old Headington but with a presence retained in the city centre, to make our second century of offering second chances as successful as the first.
Prof Audrey Mullender, Principal, Ruskin College
