A STUDENT at Oxford United's football academy is a step closer to making it in the top flight of the women's game.

Claire Marsh, 16, who plays in goal, has made it through to the final round of trials for a place on the Arsenal Ladies squad.

Claire, who is one of only two girls on the BTec course which United runs together with Peers School, in Littlemore, is optimistic about impressing the selectors to make the final cut, but says she is up against some tough opposition.

The former Peers School pupil, who lives in Knights Road, Blackbird Leys, said: "I didn't think I would make it this far.

"It was just a gamble going for a place.

"It would be really exciting if I did make it through.

"I think I stand a good chance, as I have played consistently well throughout the trials, although I am one of five goalkeepers who have made it through to the final round of selection."

She was one of a 50-strong group who attended the first round of trials.

After making it through to the second round with about 25 other girls on Tuesday, Claire found out earlier this week that she has made it into the final trials in April when four to six girls will be chosen.

The final candidates will enrol at the Arsenal Ladies' Academy in September, where they will study for a BTec National Diploma in sport while training four times a week and playing once a week.

The players will begin pre-season training in June.

Claire said: "It would obviously be a really exciting opportunity.

"Arsenal Ladies have not lost in the league this season and they are one of the best women's sides to play for.

"Most of the players have played for England, so I realise it could lead to me playing football at a really high level and I'm excited to think about the things it could lead to.

"Equally, it might be tough to get regular first team football so I'm a bit worried about how it all might work out."

Claire said being part of the United academy at Peers had helped her progress as a player, adding: "I'm always training with the boys and the course has played a massive part in keeping me fit and teaching me a lot about football."

Course organisers are recruiting for the 2008-9 intake and are particularly keen to increase the number of girls on the course.
