Sir - We were greatly interested to read Helen Peacocke's article on the origins of Frank Cooper's marmalade (Weekend, February 1).
It is true that this Oxford' brand is a symbol of the city known around the world and part of our important industrial history.
By contrast we were saddened to hear reported elsewhere that the current owners of the brand may alter the name and taste to orange jam' to appeal more to today's children.
As part of our Opening Doors Opening Minds 2007 celebrating the county's Millennium last year, food and technology students from Oxford Community School made their own citrus preserve which they test tasted with an enthusiastic public in the Westgate Centre.
Pupils at St Ebbe's Primary School also tasted a range of Frank Cooper Ltd products and while the majority preferred the strawberry jam, a clear ten per cent chose marmalade above all else. Young people not only have an appetite for their local heritage, but also for marmalade.
