Normally, these people would have been sitting in their invalid tricycles on the sidelines watching others perform.

But this was a special afternoon in which they were given the opportunity to test their sporting skills.

Disabled people turned out in their motorised trikes to take part in a variety of activities.

They are pictured as Lawrence Turner, the Tory MP for Oxford, on the extreme right in the picture, performed the opening ceremony on August 22, 1953.

The event took place at the City Motors' ground in Oxford - can anyone recall where that was?

The Oxford Mail reported: "Disabled people are able to take part in sporting activities.

"Proof of this was given when the Invalid Tricycle Association (Oxford group) held its first rally."

Mr Turner, who was the city's MP from 1950 to 1959, had agreed three months earlier to be president of the association.

He told those present: "My only apology I have to make is that unfortunately, I arrived here in a four-wheeled vehicle which, of course, is not acceptable in present company.

"However, you will perhaps forgive me when I tell you that it is a Nuffield product."

He paid tribute to those taking part in the afternoon's competitions and thanked the firms which had supported the venture.

He said there were in Oxford and the neighbourhood a number of people who would qualify to join the association but had not yet done so.

He urged them to come forward to make the movement stronger.

We can't identify anyone other than Mr Turner in the picture, but we do know the names of the competition winners.

Mr Cottle and Mr Smith came first and second in the egg and spoon race, Miss Bowerman and Mr Green were successful in the obstacle race, while in the driving test, Mr Line and Miss Meakins filled the top places.

The relay race was won by Mr Cottle, followed by Mr Green.
