An Oxfordshire GP tonight hit back at claims doctors have backed down in their dispute with the Government over surgery opening hours.
Abingdon GP Prit Buttar, who represents the county on the British Medical Association, said doctors had been forced to opt for the lesser of two evils - but were not happy.
Dr Buttar, of The Abingdon Surgery in Stert Street, said: "I don't particularly want to work evenings but other people do it and I will too - but not at a financial loss.
"Basically this is negotiating with a gun to your head."
At a BMA meeting on Thursday, doctors backed a plan which would make money directly available to surgeries to fund extra opening hours.
The alternative would have allowed primary care trusts to commission GP services from other providers - taking thousands of pounds away from practice budgets.
Doctors will be balloted on the issue later this month.
The Department of Health said more than six million patients were unhappy with current opening hours.
A spokesman said: "This is a good deal for patients."
