What an excellent tribute you paid to the Morris Minor (Oxford Mail, January 31).
I well remember going with my father in 1957 to pick up our new Minor 1000 from the old Morris Garages in St Aldate's.
It is, therefore, all the more incredible to read that Nuffield College intends to put up for sale Nuffield Place, the former home of Lord Nuffield.
Everyone in Oxford must know that Lord Nuffield funded the building of Nuffield College and that he left Nuffield Place to the college, presumably in the hope that his memory might be safe in its hands. I urge everyone who is interested to visit Nuffield Place this year, especially when the bluebells are out in the adjoining woods.
The house remains just as if Lord Nuffield were about to return from work and is a rare example of a quintessentially English middle-class home.
That Nuffield College could sell the house and risk the loss of this unique heritage is clear proof that the college should be renamed.
May I suggest 'Scrooge College' henceforth?
If the Morris Minor owners want to pay last respects to this great philanthropist, they had better hurry.
Perhaps a discreet honk outside the college might awaken a dozing conscience!
