AN HISTORIC pub has temporarily closed after a fire damaged electrical boards.
The Chequers Inn, a 19th century pub in Charney Bassett, north of Wantage, posted online to warn the blaze could have been a ‘lot worse’ if it had gone on for five more minutes.
The south Oxfordshire pub posted online: “As some of you are aware already, there was a fire on Monday at The Chequers.
“Thanks to the bravery of Ian, George and Jacqui, and the quick response of the fire service, it was put out safely and no one was hurt.

“It could have been lot worse if left for five more minutes.
“There’s damage to the electrical boards which means we are closed until this has been sorted.
“We are hoping to be back open next weekend, but please bear with us and will keep you up to date with the progress.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused, and look forward to see you all soon.”
