A driver whose dustcart killed a student has been found guilty of careless driving and fined £500.

Trevor Ashworth was also banned from driving for eight months after a judge effectively branded him an incompetent driver.

Tsz Fok, a 22-year-old Worcester College student, was killed after being run over by Ashworth's dustcart as the motorist turned left into Parks Road last April.

The prosecution case was that Ashworth's mirror was not adjusted properly to see the cyclist at the junction of Parks Road and Broad Street.

Ashworth denied careless driving but Judge Brian Loosely found him guilty today at Wantage Magistrates' Court.

Judge Loosely said Ashworth, 31, should have known of the defect.

He added: "The city centre is heavily populated by pedestrians and cyclists and, in my view, no reasonable, competent or prudent driver would drive that lorry in that state in Oxford on that morning because of the inherent danger posed to other people."

Ashworth, of Theale, must also pay £1,000 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
