A WORKING men’s club derelict for more than a decade could get a new lease of life.

The British Rail Social Club in Mill Street, Oxford, closed in 2009 and has been empty for 12 years.

Plans submitted to Oxford City Council propose that the vacant buildings be renovated, and turned into tuition rooms and study space to be used by Cherwell College.

The space would also include one larger classroom, a staffroom and toilets.

A design and access statement submitted alongside the proposals says: “The scheme does not propose to increase the number of students in attendance at Cherwell College over and above the additional students who will live at Cherwell House as a result of the extension to that building.

“It will replace tuition space in the city centre for which the college’s lease is up for renewal.

“The renovation would fulfil the need for the college expansion whilst freeing up space in the city centre for alternative use.

“As the footprint and height of the building will be unchanged, any concerns surrounding shading, overlooking or overshadowing will not be an issue.”

The planning application can be viewed via the city council’s online planning portal, using the reference number 22/01529/FUL.
