This Thursday, the Spin Jazz Club, in the Wheatsheaf off High Street, again breaks new ground by inviting Steve Rose to join the house band on piano. Known to many as a talented bass player, Rose has recently been turning more to piano. He's a bit of a musical polymath whose touch on the keyboard is recognised among the best in the country. There's a new monthly jazz gig at the Rising Sun Arts Centre, in Silver Street, Reading, starting on Sunday with the new Tom Arthurs trio - Høiby, Arthurs and Ritchie - plus solo piano from Alexander Hawkins, the gig organiser. Should be a great evening of cutting edge jazz from some of the best.

On Tuesday, jazz continues at the Big Bang restaurant in Walton Street with the Hannah Northedge Trio, a singer with a wide repertoire of standards. The basement in the Big Bang has recently been refurbished. Go to the website to book a table.

On Wednesday, Oxford Improvisers have their monthly gig at the Port Mahon, in St Clements, featuring the New Zealand bass player David Leahy, a specialist in the link between dance and improvisation plus the Oxford group Hadaly, with Malcolm Atkins, Dominic Lash and Dave Stent, and also the Butoh dance group Café Reason.

At the Old Bank, in High Street, Swindon, you can hear saxophonist Kevin Figes and his quartet, while on the same night the Hugh Rainey Band are at the Amersham Jazz club in Beaconsfield.
