SHOPPERS face £60 fines if they misuse parking spaces at the Asda store, Wheatley.

The supermarket giant is the first retailer to fine drivers for misusing disabled and parent and child parking bays in its car parks - and from February 28 the store in Wheatley is joining the scheme. Profits from the fines will go to baby charity Tommy's and Motability, which provides transport support for disabled people.

Paul Hedley, of Asda, said: "We've decided to take a stand to keep specialised parking spaces available to those customers who need them.

"We would encourage anyone that manages a car park to take our lead."

Tommy's chief executive Jane Brewin said a routine trip to the shops could turn into a nightmare for some parents.

"Putting fines in place for parking misuse gives parents with young children a helping hand," she said.

Motability fundraising director Hazel Gotfraind added: "Our customers will be pleased to know that Asda is taking such a lead in stamping out the misuse of disabled parking bays.

"With help we can help to keep many more people independently mobile, something many of us take for granted."

The rollout of the parking scheme started last month and will be implemented in Asda food stores throughout the country by March 14.
