The Royal Horticultural Society says strawberries are ready to be picked when they are red all over and long longer have any green on them. This is when the fruit is considered to be at its tastiest.

If you are planning to go strawberry picking this summer, these are the farms you should try out:

Rectory Farm

Pound Lane, Oxford, OX33 1HF

Rectory Farm’s pick your own fields are open from April to October, with strawberries available to pick now until September.

The farm does supply punnets for picking but encourages visitors to bring their own boxes to reduce plastic use, plus they offer a discount of 10p a kg if you bring your own.

Miletts Farm PYO

Millets Farm Centre, Kingston Rd, Frilford, Abingdon OX13 5HB

Miletts Farm has pick your own fields throughout the summer, however they update details of availability regularly so you know the quantities of fruit on the farm.

An admission ticket is required for everyone who wants to enter the fields. The team at the farm say pre-booking your tickets is advisable, as tickets will only be available on the door if they have spare capacity.

If you go strawberry picking, their general prices per 1.4kg is:

  • 1 x 1.4kg punnet = £8.50
  • 2 x 1.4kg punnets = £16
  • 4 x 1.4kg punnets = £30

Sotwell Manor Fruit Farm

High Rd, Wallingford OX10 0PS

Sotwell Manor Fruit Farm has pick your own and ready picked strawberries as well as ready picked raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants and gooseberries, when available in season.

At the time of this article’s publication the current batch of strawberries has finished  but a new crop will soon be ready.
